AUTHENTIC | BUHLE NKALASHE – Jan 2021
BUHLE NKALASHE | SOLO EXHIBITION
This body of work is influenced by young African creatives in Africa, and focuses on how contemporary African culture and design has evolved over the years. The vision for Authentic is about appreciating and depicting the growth of young African entrepreneurs and creatives. The healing and change of the old colonised African mindset is what drives Nkalashe to paint and be inspired by the youth of today.
Nkalashe feels that it is important to document the positive current times and hopefully to instill a beautiful creative mindset to those who are lost within the structures and expectations of society. Nkalashe believes this will allow the viewer to be encouraged and to look internally to find their purpose. In order to bring positivity to the world through areas of art, design, music and soul, the work encourages you to create your own style, movement, rhythm or passion.
Buhle Nkalashe is an emerging artist that reflects on how culture influences a society.
Nkalashe is known for his contemporary artworks executed through large canvases. His work mainly consists of portraiture and abstract paintings which are made from a mixture of mediums (charcoal, acrylic paint, oil paint and oil pastels). Fascinated by the idea of how patterns and colour can be a symbol of identity, Buhle’s art documents how African contemporary culture has evolved over the years to proudly incorporate traditional symbols that speak of its heritage.
Nkalashe has been painting for nearly 10 years and had his debut solo, The New African, at Youngblood Africa Gallery (2018) in Cape Town. He also participated in several group exhibitions, to name a few, Top 100 for the Sanlam Portrait awards (2017), Woordfees (2019), Africa’s Art Collective Seasons at the Julie Miller Institute (2019) and Saatchi Online Campaign (South African Emerging Artist) (2019). Nkalashe was also invited by Red Room Contemporary Gallery to exhibit at the Turbine Art Fair (2019). He has been featured in various Saatchi catalogues and collections.
