Evan Watkins is a 23-year-old Autistic Artist from Cape Town, South Africa. Evan attended a skills school due to his inability to cope in a mainstream schooling environment. He was diagnosed with depression and found comfort in my art talent. He has been expressing himself through art
from a very young age and enrolled at an art school. He also attended the Animation School in
Cape town to further enhance his development and love for art.

ARTIST STATEMENT | SIBUSISO ARTIS3

Sibusiso Artis3 is a self-taught South African artist born in KZN, now living and working in Cape Town. His work is abstract, grounded in figuration, suffused with the artist's unconstrained
spirituality. His comfort with imperfection, raw emotion, and spiritual presence, enable his
mastery of a poetic abstracted world, confidently occupying space with bold stroke-making.

After moving to Cape Town in 2013 and exploring the art scene, he met fellow artist, Anthony De Klerk, who introduced him to his studio in Salt River, where he began to work in exchange for classes. It was through these Saturday classes where Sibu first began to learn about the use of negative space, exploring drawing nudes and still life, amongst others. It was also during this period where his interest in abstraction heightened. In 2015, he began to exhibit his work at De
Klerk's studio.

Following this, he has participated in a number of group exhibitions in Cape Town, one of which
was alongside Andile Dyalvane and Themba Mkhangeli. He had his first solo exhibition in 2017.

During this period he also collaborated with artists' Muso Masoabi and Jeanne Pfaff. In early 2021, Sibu began hosting open studio exhibitions at his home in Little Mowbray. His work
has caught the attention of key figures in the South African art world, such as Ashraf Jamal,
who writes about him in his upcoming book "Abstraction and Figure'.

Ode to Namibia - a limited series of paintings contrasting ancient desert sand with vibrant images from this unique artist's 70-year creative journey.

Peter Webber's 1980 historic exhibition of sand paintings at the Goodman Gallery sold out in
five minutes - the entire show was snapped up by a global business magnate to uplift his offices
and boardrooms around the world.
soon after, Peter travelled to the Namib desert with erotic photographer John Thornton who
was photographing a book of desert nudes.
Struck by the mystical colours of the sculptural Namib dunes, Peter collected a bag of dusty
brown sand thinking it may be interesting to work with.

ARTIST STATEMENT | MAJOR NDLOVU

His work questions the personal freedom of figures/people in their daily duties in his community. He looks around positive and negative sides of neglected chores and comments on those
affairs. From my childhood I grew up in a community where everyone is busy trying to maintain life, in the morning and afternoon they are busy in several ways. That makes me wonder, as we live in a free country, if we feel this freedom as individuals.
He is a multi media artist who uses different mediums such as coffee as a wash, mono print,
charcoal, acrylic paint and woodcut to express his feelings.

BIOGRAPHY
Major Ndlovu was born in 1989/10/15 at Umbumbulu South Coast of Durban in KZN.
He participated at the Bat Centre on their one year Visual Art Residence. Also attended
Velobala Art Classes in DUT (City Campus) hosted by the African Art Centre. He has been
mentored by Malibongwe Shangase in his printing studio more than 4 years. Ndlovu was a
member of Amasosha Art Movement, which is a vibrant collective of Durban artists, that
promotes hard work,
solidarity and collaboration of ideas amongst artists.

Lihle Matini is a self-thought Artist, who has grown so much in his Art Carrier. The young man was born on the 01-04-1997, in the dusty Streets of Khayelitsha Cape Town, RSA. He started his Art as a Visual Artist, who specialises in Portraits as a beginner. He had much passion for Art and decided to formalise his work by enrolling at the SPIER ART ACADEMY in the period between 2019 – 2020. With his natural brilliant ART work at the institution, he developed a passion for Mosaic ART. His commitment to ART, led the Academy to nominate the young, ambitious artist to take part in one of their huge projects. Below are the projects that he worked on.

Home Exhibition for Nandos (Roman style), Tsotsonisi project (Roman Style), Medusa Project (Roman Style), where he demonstrated a good impression. The Artist is currently working close with MR.X. Sivunda, the Head of the Open HeART and his holding a fulltime position as a Mosaic Artist. The young Man aims to produce more ART works, to distribute globally and to tap into the ART market. Lihle had a chance to exhibit in the Art B gallery, Ealian group gallery and at Youngblood gallery. He has also taken part in the City of Cape Town art exhibition.

ARTIST STATEMENT | MATTHEW POTTER Abstract Potter

ARTIST STATEMENT | MATTHEW POTTER

Abstract Potter creates his artworks using the gift of Pareidolia. Patterns in random visual stimuli results in inspiration for his pieces. Best known for his imperfect shapes, bright colours and black lines his signature style encourages a discussion amongst the viewers in regards to “what do you see?” and what the artist sees. Most often we see what we want to see in life, but our perspective can change when someone flips our view on its head. With this thought in mind he often creates pieces that can be rotated, so that the viewer can see something different and exercise their imagination.

His work is often playful and in tandem contemplative.
In some of his works you’ll notice the signature black lines missing, it is not that they are missing they are just below the surface. Most of his work thus far has been acrylic on canvas and he’s exploring mixed media. Working in the advertising industry as an art director and graphic designer since 2015 Matthew Potter has worked above the line and below the line and sometimes through the line. Constantly bombarded with visual stimuli and because of this he has decided
to look within his own DNA for inspiration in fear of copying someone else’s work without knowing. The black lines in his works that separate segments of colour are inspired by the strands of his hair.

ARTIST BIOGRAPHY | LELETHU FUNDAKUBI

Lelethu Fundakubi is a 25 year old artist. Her love for art started at a very young age, when she was still in Primary School. She attended Eersterivier Secondary School (2012-2016) and was influenced by her visual art teacher Miss H Watson. In July 2019 to December 2020, Lelethu studied Mosaic, as a new medium and Art History for 18 months at the Spier Arts Academy.

Lelethu’s first exhibition was with the member’s exhibition at the Artb Gallery and she had a few exhibitions with the gallery after that. Lelethu was also involved in an online exhibition with Ealian studios, as well as being involved in an Emerging Artist’s group exhibition associated with City of Cape Town. She was recently one of the artists in the Comic Con Cape Town artist Showcase. She has had exhibitions at Youngblood Gallery as well. Lelethu is obsessed with painting and drawing portraits and all things art related. The young female artist is inspired by life in general. The purpose of her art is to create a sense of beauty or to generate strong
emotions.

The 25 year old is residing in Cape Town in Mfuleni. She is currently working at the Open Heart studio with Xolani Sivunda and other artists respectively. She believes that she has found inspiration by working with other artists and the more she paints every day, the more she learns.

ARTIST STATEMENT | RHUBEN JACOBS Originally from

ARTIST STATEMENT | RHUBEN JACOBS

Originally from the Eastern Cape, Rhuben now lives and works in Cape Town as a landscape architect and artist. As a fulltime designer, he only very recently discovered his passion for abstract art.

Rhuben’s work is deliberately bold & evocative, captured in his use of distinctive forms and vivid colours. Adopting principles of landscape design, he challenges and redefines the conventional notions of form, shape, composition, colour, and line.

The most recent paintings are created outdoors, beneath Stone Pine canopies and atop sandstone boulders. In an attempt to capture the slowly moving shadows cast by the dense foliage, each canvas is an expression of the passing of time as portrayed by nature. At set intervals, shadows are carefully traced, marking their position as they roll across the canvas with overlapping colours to visualize specific moments in time. As a result, the artist no longer dictates but rather creatively interprets that which already exists.

Each piece of art is an evolution of expression. Between overlapping forms and sweeping colours, viewers are encouraged to look beyond the obvious, to seek out the beauty in the mundane and to uncover the magic within and around us.

ARTIST STATEMENT | TERTIUS VAN DYK

Tertius is a surrealist artist who was born in Overberg in the Western Cape, South
Africa, being an avid lover of trees, rocks, rust and everything earthy, his trademarks
are his take on trees and the moon, often in a desert-like setting. He also draws from
the ocean depicting whales from his home town Hermanus, sharks and shipwrecks.

Tertius’s love of art has been lifelong, but he came to professional art only later in
life when it became clear that what he was producing was not only greatly valued but
also in high demand. It can take time for our best dreams to be realised......

Tertius uses mixed medium in his art but works mostly in acrylic on large canvas
format. He says of his art, “I love wide open spaces, full of emptiness and peaceful
solitude and I strive to bring this forward in my art”. Drawing from the beauty of the
African landscape his imagination puts outwardly mismatched concepts together to
create surrealistic gems.

Mthuthuzeli (Sthu) Manaka, son of the late Matsemela Manaka, a world renowned artist, is a self-taught contemporary abstract portrait painter, born and raised in Soweto Johannesburg, part of a collective trio called “My Loves”, currently touring South Africa exhibiting. Last year he had a show with Kalashnikov Gallery and showcased at the FNB Art Fair.
