Sealife Drawing – 5Mar

Born in New Zealand (1967); lived in Fiji, Scotland, East London and now Cape Town. Ian studied and majored in graphic design at East London Technical College. He has worked in top advertising agencies and design studios in London and Cape Town. His passion for travel, and sense of adventure, have a great influence on and feed into his art. For the last fifteen years he has attended figure drawing sessions at the Artists Co-Op in Observatory and more recently Brights Studio in Woodstock.

A growing passion of Ian’s is underwater photography. He experiments with this during the free-diving in our beautiful oceans. The opportunity came about to showcase his unique recent works entitled “SeaLife Drawing,” which is a combination of both underwater photography and figure drawing. The “Sea Life Drawing” series is a combination of the two genres and includes themes of mystery, Greek Sea gods, nymphs, fantasia and fatal attraction. The dives sites are along Simons Town area, on the False Bay side and Oudekraal area on the Atlantic side. The one breath hold experience is one of wonderment, awe and with elements of danger. At the same time, silence, spiritual, sensual, dreamy and the mystery of the sea life experience.

He currently works from his studio in Observatory, Cape Town as an artist and designer.
