Singa-Ba-Ntu

This body of work investigates the interplay between human identity, heritage, and the multi-layered complexities of individual expression. Through a distinct approach to portraiture, the series explores how personal narratives are constructed not as static, singular images, but as vibrant mosaics built from lived experience, cultural memory, and resilience.

Central to the work is a rhythmic, mosaic-like application of colour across the skin tones of the figures. By breaking down the surface of the face into deliberate, geometric patches of varied hues, ranging from bold primary accents to monochromatic grayscale tones, the portraits challenge traditional optical realism. Instead, the skin becomes a canvas of energy, reflecting the internal multidimensionality of each subject. The figures, rendered in profile and direct frontal views, project a sense of dignity, contemplation, and presence.

Fashion and adornment — distinctive headwear, tailored caps, modern eyewear, and traditional silhouettes — serve as visual anchors within the compositions. These elements bridge the contemporary and the historical, highlighting how style and self-presentation act as forms of personal agency and cultural continuity. Set against flat, immersive colour fields of vivid purples, rich blues, and warm ochres, each subject is brought into sharp focus, demanding an intimate, face-to-face encounter with the viewer.

Ultimately, this project is a homage to human character and identity. It invites viewers to look beyond initial surfaces and consider the intricate, colourful layers that define who we are, where we come from, and how we carry ourselves forward.

Artist Biography

Growing up in the deep rural areas of KwaZulu-Natal, I learned to be resourceful and creative out of necessity. Without toys, I made my own, like wire vehicles and clay figures, which sparked my love for art. Seasonal changes dictated our play, with outdoor games in summer and indoor activities during other times. A television briefly introduced me to the outside world, and Dragon Ball Z sparked my fascination with art. Encouraged to pursue art as a career after my first painting, I began to nurture my creative passion. My rural upbringing taught me resilience, creativity, and the value of self-expression.
