ARTIST STATEMENT
In my paintings, I delve into the deeper meanings of leadership and power. It’s Good to Be King serves as an allegory for humanity’s complex relationship with power and the qualities that define a true leader. Through contemporary abstract faces and a vibrant palette of meaningful colors, I reflect on the art of influence and the transformative impact of speech.
Leadership transcends age; it lies in the natural charisma and authority that certain individuals possess. These are the people whose words command attention and inspire action—those who motivate and guide others. My inspiration comes from personal experiences, observing such figures in my family, among friends, and throughout my life. These real-life leaders, with their intelligence, calm demeanor, and quiet confidence, have left a profound mark on my work.
Art is my sanctuary, my calling, and my way of giving form to what I’ve experienced and imagined. Every idea I bring to the canvas feels like a divine inspiration—a gift to be shared with the world.
ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Joel Kabangu was born on December 16, 1989, in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo, at the former General Hospital (Mama Yemo). Originally from the village of Teke, he grew up in a large family immersed in creativity and culture. In 2009, he earned a baccalaureate from the Institute of Fine Arts in Kinshasa, specializing in plastic arts. In 2019, Joel relocated to the Western Cape, South Africa, to further pursue his artistic journey.
Joel’s passion for art began in his childhood. As a young boy, he drew daily, believing his creations were extraordinary. While he grew more critical of his work as he matured, his desire to create never faltered. For Joel, painting became a process of discovery—revealing images and emotions hidden within the canvas.
He works primarily with oils, capturing whatever comes to mind. For Joel, painting is more than a skill; it is a deeply emotional experience that has brought healing and meaning to his life. Over the years, he has explored new mediums and subjects, but his devotion to art remains unwavering. To Joel, every painting is not just an artwork—it is a testament to his journey and a celebration of the boundless inspiration that fuels him.
