In 2023, Richard Joshua’s exhibition revealed a painful truth: harmful language had become so normalized in Cape Flats life that residents no longer noticed it. Through his art, Richard saw that awareness was just the beginning—the verbal violence in daily conversations carried generations of unaddressed trauma, quietly shaping relationships and identity.
From this recognition, TAAL (The Arts and Language project) was born. It emerged not as an external intervention, but from the Coloured community’s own capacity for resilience and transformation—an acknowledgment that the community which survived so much holds within itself the power to heal.
